A calendar we will not invent

Community markets, commemorations and food events happen in Mitchell Shire. The live list lives on council pages. This guide explains how to read them — and why archived event URLs now 301 here.

This is an independent local guide. It is not Mitchell Shire Council, Parks Victoria, the Australian Army, Visit Victoria, or the Seymour Visitor Information Centre.

Where do you check what’s on in Seymour? Directly: Discover Mitchell, which invites people to “discover local markets, art exhibitions, family and community events and more,” and the events listings council maintains under that hub. The Seymour town page and the downloadable visitor guides are orientation, not a week-by-week diary. This independent site will not freeze a date into evergreen copy.

The parked archive had /events/, /submit-event/, market posts, festival countdowns and dated concerts. Those messy URLs now 301 to this page or to contact. That is how you avoid a soft-404 stuffed with 2018 trivia nights.

How to verify a date

  1. Open the council or organiser URL that states the time.
  2. Check whether the page is for this year. A PDF colophon that says “correct at time of printing, May 2021” is not this Saturday.
  3. Check VicEmergency and CFA. Outdoor events in the North Central district can be the first thing a fire rating cancels.
  4. If the event is on a rail trail, open greatvictorianrailtrail.com.au.
  5. If you still cannot find a date, there is no date. Do not ask this inbox to invent one.

Recurring types — not a schedule

Council material and the old IA talked about community markets, food-and-wine gatherings (including pages that once pointed at Tastes of the Goulburn), commemorative services, and exhibitions at the Old Courthouse. Those are types. Local markets explains how to think about markets without naming a stallholder. Country racing refuses to invent a race-day field. Library events sit on council library pages.

If an organiser wants a guest-post style note on the blog, they still need a public verification URL. We will not republish a flyer PDF as fact.

Who not to contact

Do not use the editorial form for ticketing, lost property, or “what time does the gate open.” Do not use it as Triple Zero. The contact page lists the official doors: 000, VicEmergency 1800 226 226, Mitchell Shire, PTV, Parks Victoria, the Army museum appointment path.

If you are trying to list a business rather than an event, that is a different question — still on contact, still without a self-serve directory login.

Why the old calendar died on purpose

Event pages age like milk. A 2018 “countdown to food and wine” that still returned 200 would be a lie. Exact-match 301s to this guide keep the inbound link and kill the stale body. If you are an organiser who used to paste into the old WordPress, the public job now is council’s listing path and your own site. This domain can explain the type of event — market, commemoration, exhibition — without pretending to be the ticket booth.

ANZAC and commemorative days are a special case. The Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk and Light Horse Memorial Park are landscapes you can visit without a festival. A service time, if one exists, belongs on an RSL, Defence or council notice, not in a paragraph we would have to update every April.

Travel and events are the same risk stack

People treat “there’s a market” as permission to ignore the Hume or the North Central rating. It is not. Getting here is the transport hub; this page is the calendar literacy hub. If V/Line is not operating through a Catastrophic district, your event plan is already cancelled, whatever a poster said on Thursday.

Bring water, a charged phone, and the VicEmergency app if you are going outdoors. That is not a statistic. It is the same advice the visitor guide already prints: check the weather and the fire rating, especially in summer; never travel into high-risk bushfire areas where a Code Red rating has been declared or where fires are burning.

If you came here looking for Tastes of the Goulburn or a named market, open the council events URL that currently exists. If it does not exist, the event is not something this site can restore.

What people always ask

Where do I check what’s on in Seymour?

Start at Mitchell Shire’s Discover Mitchell hub and events pages. This site does not invent a calendar.

Can I submit an event here?

The old submit-event URL now points to contact. We are not a council listing desk. Use official shire channels for public events.

What happened to old event pages?

Dated event URLs receive one exact-match 301 to this guide. We do not republish past line-ups as if they were still on.

If it has a date, it needs a live URL

Council, the trail site, or the organiser. Not a paragraph we wrote in October.
