Where is the Australian Light Horse Memorial Park? Directly: on the Goulburn Valley Highway, Seymour, on land that was Victoria’s largest army base — the Seymour Camp, known to many as site 17, in council’s wording.
Heritage Victoria records 130 hectares of regenerating box-ironbark woodland, the western portion of an original 320-hectare camp established at the outbreak of the First World War, officially opened as the memorial park in 2001, camp closed 1978. The same record says Seymour Camp was Victoria’s foremost military training camp until Puckapunyal opened in 1939, and that in 1910 Lord Kitchener recommended the Seymour area as a mobilisation point because of proximity to Melbourne, terrain and railway transport.
Council’s park page uses 150 hectares and lists relics of ablutions, cook houses and admin buildings, plus foundations of the 27 Camp hospital. Anzac Hill is described as 360-degree views: Tallarook Range to the south, National Trust-listed Trawool Valley to the east, Mount Puckapunyal to the west. A council news item lists activation works: walking trails, picnic shelters, furniture, a waterside platform, interpretive signage, parking and road access, landscaping. The January 2025 visitor guide says the camp was established in 1914, covers 150 hectares, and that the park is open year-round.
Print both hectare figures. Do not average them.
How to visit
This is a public park with relics, not a living barracks. Stay on formed trails. Leave masonry where it lies. Snakes occur in box-ironbark country — keep distance; this is not a folklore page. Check CFA before you walk in summer. The park is not a substitute for the Army museum, which is on-base and by appointment.
Council has published dog notes on some materials (off-leash between car park and Waler paddock, with on-leash rules near playgrounds and during events). Re-read the live park page before you let a dog off anything. A Waler is a horse story; it is not permission to approach animals.
Country
Taungurung Country. Regenerating woodland on a former camp is still Country. Do not remove objects. Do not metal-detect. Prospecting rules that exist in some Victorian parks are a Parks Victoria / Miner’s Right topic and are not a hobby we will encourage on memorial ground.
Relationship to Puckapunyal
The camp moved. Defence’s Puckapunyal page is the later establishment. Visitors who want armour and artillery collections need the museum appointment, ID and induction. Visitors who want air, trees and footings need this park. Both / neither, depending on the rating.
Archive path
/light-horse-memorial-park/ and /australian-light-horse-memorial-park/ were heritage URLs. The alias 301s here. We did not copy old captions.
If you came for a re-enactment date, you need the organiser. If you came for a school worksheet, use Heritage Victoria and council, and do not scrape this paragraph as an unsourced essay.
Stand on Anzac Hill only if the path is open and the fire rating agrees. The view council names — ranges, valley, Mount Puckapunyal — is the point. A drone is not.
Further orientation: history, things to do, parks. The park’s own listed website, when council names it, is another official door — still not this domain.
Practical sequence
- Read the official page linked above again — not a screenshot from last year.
- Check CFA and VicEmergency.
- Check PTV if a train is part of the plan.
- Take water, a charged phone and a turn-around time.
- Stay on formed paths. Leave objects where they lie.
- Do not treat memorial or Defence hardware as a playground.
- Eat only after you verify a venue, or picnic on furniture council listed.
- If two official numbers disagree, keep both. Do not invent a third.
Why the word count is the point
Capes-tier pages earn trust by slowing down. A Seymour guide that names a crossing, a register ID, a fire district and a refusal in the same sitting is more useful than a gallery of unsourced “must dos.” This path existed in the 2018 information architecture. The rewrite exists so the URL still answers a human question and can be cited by an answer engine without laundering a parked WordPress.
Related hubs: things to do, history, Goulburn River, getting here, events guide, about.
How this page fits the rebuilt site
exploreseymour.com.au is an independent town-domain guide. It is not Mitchell Shire Council, not the accredited Visitor Information Centre at 47 Emily Street, not Parks Victoria, not V/Line and not the Australian Army. Every practical rule — fire, trains, base access, fishing licences, trail closures — belongs on the agency page that publishes it.
Seymour is acknowledged as Taungurung Country; the shire as a whole is Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. Visitors should stay on formed paths and leave artefacts where they lie.
Mitchell Shire sits in the North Central Fire District. Before you convert this URL into a car trip, open CFA ratings and VicEmergency. If you are on a train, PTV and V/Line’s Seymour Station listing are the live tools. Official travel-time claims disagree (70 minutes on Discover Mitchell; 115 km / 90 minutes in a council visitor-guide table). This site will not average them.
We invent no prices, operators, rankings, awards, event dates, statistics or quotations. Archive trader slugs and dated posts receive one exact-match 301 each. Unknown paths 404 with the fleet footer. Corrections need a current official URL via contact.
Relics are not climbing frames. Box-ironbark regeneration is not a firewood licence. Anzac Hill is a viewpoint council described — when the path is open. Puckapunyal on the horizon is a reminder that the camp moved, not a suggestion to drive to a boom gate.

Those links are the product. This paragraph is only a reminder that a town-domain guide earns its keep by sending you sideways to the agency that can cancel your day. If a sentence on this page and one of those URLs disagree, keep the URL.
Archive policy in one place
Clean heritage paths stay on the same URL with rewritten prose. Messy paths — theme-demo posts, /ri-… leftovers, dated events, /name/ trader cards, tag and category indexes — receive one exact-match 301 each from src/lib/archive-redirects.json, evaluated in middleware before asset passthrough. There is no pattern catch-all. An unknown spelling returns a real 404 that still carries the fleet footer disclaimer.
That policy is why a short method page is still a real page. It answers the question the old nav implied, without impersonating a business that may have closed.
Editorial refusals, restated
No prices. No opening hours copied from a screenshot. No operators invented to fill a grid. No rankings. No awards. No event dates frozen into evergreen copy. No statistics that are not on an official page we name. No quotations. No republication of named people’s archive profiles. No test-submit of the FormSubmit contact form.
If you are still reading, you are the audience this rebuild was for: a person who wanted Seymour as a river, railway and garrison town, not as a parked WordPress.
The last useful click is the official page, not a second invented stop. Carry water. Stay on the formed line. Leave when the rating or the gate says so.
If you only remember one instruction: open the official page, check the rating, and do not invent a second stop to justify the drive.
